Celebrating a Classic: Happy National Great American Pot Pie Day!

Happy National Great American Pot Pie Day! When lots of people hear the term 'pot pie' their mind automatically goes to Chicken Pot Pie; however a pot pie can feature almost any kind of protein including chicken, turkey, beef, fish, veal, and the list continues. In addition to the protein, pot pies typically include sauce or gravy, seasonings, and vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, green beans, and peas. All of these ingredients combined and covered with a crust creates the delicious pot pie we know and love today.

Different variations of the pot pie have been around for hundreds of years, but the first printed recipe for American Pot Pie was recorded in 1785. The American Pot Pie's popularity continued to grow over the years making it one of the staple foods of the United States. Then in 1951, the CA Swanson Company created the first frozen pot pie. This allowed the popularity of the pot pie to grow even more since the meal could be prepared at home or purchased frozen. Finally, on September 23 in 2002, Marie Callendar's founded the National Great American Pot Pie Day. This national observance is a day that is still widely celebrated.
